  • Clovis, King of the Franks

    Earle Rice jr.

Library Binding (Mitchell Lane Publishers, Nov. 17, 2009)
In 481 CE, the Salian Franks crowned Clovis I their king. At the age of fifteen, the young monarch set about uniting all the Franks barbarian tribes that inhabited much of the region that became modern-day France and Germany. A fierce warrior and an astute administrator, he expanded his originally modest kingdom in northeast Gaul (France) by all possible means, including conquest, marriage, diplomacy, and deception. When he married Clotilda, a devout Roman Catholic, he converted to Catholicism and became instrumental in spreading his new religion across Europe. By the time Clovis died in 511, his domain covered most of Western Europe, from the North Sea to the Mediterranean, and from the Atlantic Ocean to the source of the Danube River. The French regard him as the founder of their monarchy.

  • Pythagoras

Susan Sales Harkins William H. Harkins

Library Binding (Mitchell Lane Publishers, Sept. 14, 2007)
Pythagoras was a man of his times and for all times. So important to mankind was his birth that the gods sent his birth announcement via the Pythian oracle. Tradition holds that he studied with the greatest minds the ancients had to offer. Pherecydes taught him that the soul is immortal. Thales and Anaximander taught him to trust only what he experienced. He studied with the first recorded scientist. Egyptian priests taught him radical ideas about the human soul. From the Babylonians magi, he learned higher mathematics and about the cosmos. He probably had the most well rounded higher education of any other living person of his time, but when most men were done with life, Pythagoras was just making his mark. Around the age of fifty, he founded a school of higher mathematics, philosophy, music, and religion. His lessons still impact our scientific and moral communities today.

  • Drew Brees

Some experts thought he was too short to play in the National Football League. Some coaches didn t believe he d recover from an injury. In the end, he proved them wrong to become a record-setting quarterback for Purdue University and the NFL s New Orleans Saints. He led Purdue to its first Rose Bowl appearance in 34 years. He led New Orleans to the 2010 Super Bowl victory over the favored Indianapolis Colts with a near-perfect performance. Along the way he used his Brees Dream Foundation to help the city of New Orleans rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Based on interviews by veteran sportswriter Pete DiPrimio, this action-packed sports biography tells how Drew Brees became a real-life hero for a community that badly needed one.

  • Plymouth Colony: The Pilgrims Settle in New England

    Kathleen Tracy

Library Binding (Mitchell Lane Publishers, Sept. 15, 2006)
In 1620, one hundred two Puritans boarded the Mayflower on a dangerous adventure. For them, the promise of religious freedom was worth risking their lives. They never made it to their destination in Virginia but landed much farther north. After surviving unsanitary and cramped conditions on the Mayflower, the settlers founded Plymouth Colony, where they faced starvation, brutal winter weather, and the ever-present scourge of disease. During the first year, more than half the settlers died. These survivors, many of them teenagers who had lost their parents, refused to leave. With the help of Native Americans who showed the settlers how to farm and introduced them to maize, Plymouth Colony survived and flourished. The success of the Puritans encouraged other young Europeans to settle in the British colonies and paved the way for a new nation. Although Plymouth Colony was annexed to Massachusetts in 1691, the Puritan legacy has remained strong in the United States of America.
